Playoff Fantasy Football

What is Playoff Fantasy Football?  It’s a fantasy football season for the NFL Playoffs!  If you haven’t heard of this, you will want to check it out for yourself.  It’s arguably even more fun than regular season football because the season is shorter, you don’t need to worry about setting lineups, and there is a fun twist to it.

So how does it work?  Just as with regular season fantasy football, it starts with a draft.  Of course you will need to first establish your league’s scoring rules, and find the right number of players.  The great thing about playoff fantasy football is that you don’t need to worry about setting a schedule, so you can have an odd number of teams.  More about that in a bit.

As part of your league’s rules, you must determine what a starting lineup is.  This is going to be just like a regular season starting lineup.  For example 1 Quarterback, 2 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 1 Place Kicker, and 1 Special Teams/Defense.  Or whatever lineup your league prefers.

An important distinction of playoff fantasy football is that your starting lineup is your entire roster.  That’s it.  No reserve players, no worrying about starting lineups, etc.  The team you draft is your entire starting roster.  There are no transactions, it doesn’t change.  What you draft is your team throughout the playoffs.

So how does that work?  It’s actually quite simple.  Each week you will receive points for any of your players that played that week.  If one of your players is on a bye, or his team is knocked out of the playoffs, then you receive no points.  You simply receive points for any statistics during games for which he plays.

And that’s the fun twist.  Unlike regular season fantasy football, where everyone plays an equal number of games, you also must take into account how many games you think a player will play in!  If a team is a heavy favorite to make it to the Superbowl, they will probably have a first round bye.  That means the most that team can play in will be 3 games.

But as recent playoff history has shown, wild card teams can often go deep into the playoffs.  The Pittsburgh Steelers were a #6 seed in the 2005 season, and won the Superbowl!  That’s 4 games.  Obviously picking a player from a wild card team is risky, because they could be out after one game.  But that’s where the fun part lies!

The winner of the league is the team with the most points after the Superbowl.  It’s a ton of fun, is really simple, you don’t have any lineups to set, and makes the playoffs even more exciting.  Especially if your favorite team isn’t in the playoffs.  And it gives you a chance to make up for (or continue your success of) your regular season fantasy football team.
